Horses with an attitude are my passion!
When I am not riding them, I am painting them. Whether painting in surrealistic or realistic style, I try to reveal their playful nature with flashing eyes, arched necks and expressive ears that signal an imminent outburst of hi-jinks. I'm always amazed and entertained by their 'horse body language'.
My paintings often possess a dreamlike quality. Intrigued by the similarity in emotions displayed by horse and man, I look beneath the surface and attempt to capture invisible bonds that have intertwined horse and man throughout history. Themes such as power struggles, loneliness, war, friendship, loyalty and maternal love are frequent subjects.
I ride my own horses through the high mountain trails in Glacier National Park and northwestern Montana, where I grew up. The ever-changing landscape is another source of inspiration, continually captivating me with its timeless beauty and raw energy. Inspired, I return to my Kalispell studio to paint, surrounded by my husband and two boys.
I have studied oil painting with nationally renowned impressionist Joe Abbrescia, surrealist Marvin Messing, and landscape painter John Atkinson. These experiences have greatly contributed to my growth as an artist. I additionally taught middle school fine art, art therapy and special education before focusing on my art career full time.
My work has been exhibited throughout numerous regional galleries in Montana and Idaho.
If I see you on the trail, call out so my silly gelding doesn't think you're a grizzly bear in hiker's clothing...
